네덜랜드인 Arjen A. Lucassen(G)의 프로젝트 밴드인 Ayreon이 98년도에 새앨범을 냈는데, 최근에 서울 음반에서 라이센스로 내놓았습니다.
비닐포장에 붙은 스티커에 프로그레시브-스페이스 오페라 라고 써있는 것 같은데, 조금 전에 버렸는데 잘 모르겠네요. ^^;
역시 서울음반에서 내놓은 Ayreon의 데뷔앨범 _The Final Experiment_ 스타일이죠.
90년대 Spock's Beard, Arena, Queensryche, Devil Doll, ... 같은 스타일을 하나라도 좋아하지 않는 분이면 절대 구입해서는 안될 앨범입니다. 두장짜리 앨범이라서 약간 지루하기 까지 합니다.
다음과 같은 아주 유명한 사람들과 별로 이름없는 사람들이 무더기로 등장해서 조금씩 다른 분위기의 곡들을 연주하고, 대화하고 있는 듯한 보컬을 들려줍니다. 각 보컬이 연극에서 배우처럼 역할을 맡아서 그 분위기를 낼려고 노력하고 있는데, 역할이 Egytian, Highlander, Indian, Roman, Hippie, Knight, Futureman, Babarian 입니다.
하모니가 어우러지는 백보컬과 권투시합이나 레슬링 빅매치가 시작하기 전에 나올것 같은 키보드 빵빠레는 여전합니다. 음색으로만 치면 유치한 느낌이 들죠. 거기다 앨범 전체가 SF, fantasy, 극적, 서사시적인 가사로 이뤄져 있는 콘셉 앨범입니다.

저는 Fish의 보컬과 Thijs Van Leer의 flute 연주를 매우 기대하고 들었는데, 약간 섭섭합니다. 너무 짧아서요. Fish는 highlander라는 역할을 맡고 있는데요. 초반에 highlander가 죽는 바람에 많이 나오지 않습니다. -.-; Thijs Van Leer의 연주는 몇십초 연주가 몇번 있습니다.
누가누가 나온다더라 라는 기대를 가지고 들으시면 분명 실망할겁니다.
Death Metal의 보컬, Devil Doll의 비명소리, 멜로트론, 바이올린, flute 등 재미있는 부분이 있긴 하지만 전체적으로는 키보드와 신디사이저가 주를 이루고 있습니다. 항간에 이 앨범이 The Flower Kings의 앨범보다 좋다는 소문이 있는 것 같은데, 그 정도는 아닌것 같네요.
